Examples - Types of ministries

  1. First: The ministry is a reflection of the Pastor.
  2. Second: The ministry is a reflection of its resources.
    • People
    • Technology
    • Education
    • Talent
    • Training

Emphasis on family

This ministry focus' on the family and provides services that reflect their needs. This is the most difficult ministry to have. Because you MUST deal with every aspect of a person, from infant to senior. Typically a church with emphasis for the family will have a bunch of functioning auxiliaries and community activities:

  • Childrens church
  • Bible classes for men
  • Bible classes for women
  • Bible classes for youth
  • Day care
  • Bible class for seniors
  • Choir for adults, children, etc

Emphasis on structure & organized experience

This ministry focus' on structure and planning. Typically, a pastor who implements structure and organization in their churches will have training in this area from college, school or the private sector.

Examples:

  • Administrative skills - for church operations
  • Project management - for brainstorming, planning, and implement church functions

Why should a ministry be organized?

Ever took a road trip without a plan? You can get lost really fast in unfamiliar territory. Have you ever lost your keys? How much time did you waste trying to find them?

  1. Some people are drawn to organization while others find disorganization as a turn off. It doesn't matter how well you speak, you won't attract some classes of people, such as professionals when things are not organized.
  2. Organization provides a window into the ministry and transparency. A lack of organization will allowing for problems to hide, and surprise you.

Emphasis on personal experience

This is one of the easiest ministries to create and is the one most pastor's are familiar with. It doesn't require a lot of skills, people, training or talent. Just down to earth people skills.

The benefit of a small ministry like this rather than a medium or large one is the one on one experience the pastor has with the members.

Some people prefer a small ministry over a large one due to their needs, such as the need for close interaction. People have different personalities and needs which informs their decisions about joining your ministry or to avoid certain experiences that comes with larger churches.

Emphasis on educational services

A ministry that focus' on education is a difficult ministry to setup because it requires a Pastor to have certain skills, or his members.

For example:

  • A pastor familiar with websites can do more and reach more people than a pastor with a brick and mortar school.
  • A pastor who can create educational content can educate the people in a variety of ways that appeals to the learner.

The core task of education is to lead people from ignorance to knowledge. The benefit for a ministry that provides educational services are:

  • Education influences beliefs - what is taught at the church will influence the mind and thinking of members, who will act on those beliefs, and use them to limit or extend their grow.
  • Provides additional choices - it is true that people who lack certain types of knowledge and training will not be able to perform or survive under certain situations. Education and training arms a person with what is necessary to navigate new challenges.
  • Most professional people prefer it - are attracted to ministries that provide education with emphasis on real life challenges.

Emphasis on healing

A ministry that emphases healing is not a difficult ministry to setup. You simply need a Pastor with the gift and a person with a need.

Healing is another aspect of the work of the ministry. Most who will walk through our church doors for the first time are broken people.

  • Trauma,
  • depression
  • and anxiety

are examples of serious health challenges that people face. As the economy continues to change, more and more people are homeless or living in vehicles, tents, etc.
